World Test Championship runners up India have been rocked by the news that star wicket-keeper batsmen Rishabh Pant has contracted Covid. Delhi Capitals captain Pant and training assistant Daynaand Garani have both been tested positive for the virus. The 23-year old Pant is close to completing his quarantine and can join up with his teammates in Durham should he return two negative tests. India who were outplayed in the final of the inaugural World Test Championship final by winners New Zealand will be hoping that they have their best players available for their five-match test series.
Fellow wicket-keeper Wridihman Saha has been a player identified as someone who has been in contact with Garani. According to reports Secretary of Board of Cricket for India Jay Shah, had sent an email to the 23-man team warning them of rising Covid-19 cases in the country. Sporting tournaments like Wimbledon and the recently concluded Euro2020 were outlawed by the India board for attending. Pant who has been isolating for eight days, did share pictures on social media attending the Euro2020 match between England and Germany.
Team India were given a 20-day break before joining back together, but with the news that Delhi captain Pant has contracted Covid, added to the news of the seven England players who were forced to sit out of the One Day International series with Pakistan, then this is maybe a wake-up call for those who think Covid doesn't exist now. Virat Kohli's men will enter into a Bio Bubble environment (something are all too familiar with) for the first test on 4th August till the last test on Friday, September 11th.
Vice-President of BCCI Rajiv Shukla said;
"One player has tested positive but he has been in isolation for the last eight days. He was not staying in any hotel with the team, so no other player has been affected."
