This past week has been a Dogwood Winter here in Kentucky. Cold, with a bit of snow has been the norm for the past several days. This cold snap, with the blooming of the Dogwood trees, has given this brief season its name.
This afternoon had me riding along with my husband to look at some property along our local river. Dogwoods are in bloom all over our county. Beautiful, but I haven't had any luck with planting them here at our farm.
Strangely Dogwood flowers aren't true flowers. The yellow cluster in the middle is the flower and the petals are bracts. The bracts protect the flower while it is forming and only unfold when the flower cluster is mature.
